SOURCES OF WATER

SOURCES OF WATER

The two main sources of water are:

  • Surface water
  • Groundwater
Surface water is water on top of the ground. Rivers, lakes and ponds are sources of surface water. Water in oceans and seas is surface water too.

Groundwater is water that is under the water. Rainwater soaks into the ground. The water goes through soil, sand rocks and gets stored under the ground. We can use groundwater by taking it out through wells and water pumps.

Deserts have no water bodies. Sometimes, a small water body is found in deserts. It is surrounded by a few trees. This is called Oasis.

Rivers to Houses

We can use river water. Before it reaches out homes, the water is cleaned in a water treatment plant. The treatment plant kills the germs in the water and makes it clean and safe for people to use. The clean water then travels to homes through pipes.

After the water is used in homes, it goes down the drains and travel to a wastewater treatment plant. The treatment plant cleans the water before it goes back into the river.

Water for All

Clean and safe drinking water is needed by all. But today, a lot of people in our country do not get it. Either they do not get clean water.

We all need to be very careful while using water. We need to save as much water as possible so that others can get it too.

Some easy water saving tips are:

  • Fix leaking taps, toilets and showers.
  • Turn off the tap when brushing teeth or rubbing soap on your hands.
