OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS

Birds are animals that have feathers and wings, and they lay eggs. There are thousands of different kinds of birds found all over the world. Let us read more about our feathered friends.
Birds vary greatly in size and colour. Birds like flycatchers and sunbirds are very small, while vultures and eagles are very big. Birds like crows are black, while others are very colourful, like kingfishers and peacocks.

Waterbirds like ducks and pelicans have webbed feet, while birds that hunt have sharp claws.


The woodpecker has a sharp beak that helps it holes in trees to catch insects. Ducks have flat beaks that help them eat small plants in the water. 


Birds like lapwings build their nests on the ground, while weaver birds make beautiful nests in trees. 


Most Birds are active during the day, but owls are active only during the night.

Domesticated birds are those which live near human beings. Birds like parakeets, mynahs and ducks are kept as pets.


Common Indian Birds 


Common Babbler: These are also called the seven sisters because they are found in groups of 6-10. They chatter and chirp a lot, and take care of each other. They eat insects, grains, nectar and berries.


Mynah: It has a dark brown body, a black head and a bright yellow beak. It can imitate many kinds of sounds and calls. It feeds on insects and fruits.

Indian Magpie Robin: They are black and white in colour. They feed mainly on insects, make their nests in holes in trees, and sometimes in buildings. Magpie can sing and make different kinds of sounds.


Crow Pheasant: They have a long black tail, brown wings and red eyes. They are found in jungles and gardens. They eat insects and sometimes the eggs of other birds.


Weaver Bird: These birds are famous for the large nest they make using grass, leaves and twigs. They have rounded cone-shaped beaks and eat seeds.


Hornbill: Famous for their long, curved and colourful beaks, these birds live in thick forests. They feed on fruit, insects and small animals.


Birds of Prey and Flightless Birds


Birds that hunt other for food are called predatory birds, or bird of prey. These birds hunt fish, water birds, snakes and many other animals. They have very good eyesight and can see their prey from a great height. They have strong feet to hold their food, sharp curved beaks for tearing flesh and very strong. Some common predatory birds are kites, eagles, vultures, falcons and ospreys.
