FOREST

Forests as a Natural Resource

Forests are large areas of land, which are covered with plants and trees and are home to many animals. Plants in forests provide us with fruits, nuts, medicine, and make paper. Latex for rubber comes from rubber trees that grow in forests.

The trees of a forest hold the soil together and reduce soil erosion. This prevents landslides and flooding. The process of cutting down trees for setting up mines, industries, roads and agriculture is called deforestation. As a result of deforestation, soil gets eroded and many animals and plants lose their natural homes. We need to conserve forests. The process of planting new forests in areas where forests have been cleared is called afforestation. It helps control soil erosion, increase moisture in the air and provide shelter to wildlife.
Importance of forests

A lot of people depend on forests to earn a living. We, in turn, depend on many things that came from forests. We need wood form forests to make furniture. Some people in the villages us wood as a fuel. People living close to forests collect wood, leaves and dry branches. People who live near forests sell herbs as medicine, along with fruits and berries. They also make handicrafts baskets and mats from the forest products and sell them in the market to earn a living.
